Convertible Remote Control Module FAQ
There is no convertible top button on my remote key fob. So how does this work?
The headlight button on the key fob, in conjunction with the door lock and unlock buttons is used for the convertible top functions. The headlight button functions are still usable too. (On a few cars the headlight button on the key fob has a picture of a horn instead of a headlight, but the function is the same.) For example, to drop the top with the door locked, you press the headlight button once, and the door unlock button once.
Are there any safety considerations with the use of this product?
Yes, it is very important to understand that remote operation of the convertible top entails new safety responsibilities, since the top can now be operated without watching its operation. Please carefully review the SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS.
Please do not purchase or install this product if you do not intend to follow the safety instructions or do not understand them.
Can I install this myself?
Only you can answer that, but here is a guideline: if you are handy enough to replace a home light switch, jack up a car and put on a spare tire, and assemble a piece of IKEA furniture all with reasonable confidence, then you are up to this job. If not, then you should consider finding someone with at least these skills to do it for you.
I do not want to mess with my car...can I get someone professional to install this for me?
A competent (preferably Jaguar) mechanic can install this, as can some audio shops or custom shops. Always provide them with the instructions...do not expect them to know how to install this without the
instructions.
TheJagWrangler LLC also does occasional installations for those of you who live in or are visiting the
mid-Atlantic region of the US. Please contact us for installation inquiries.
Do I need any special tools to install the remote top module?
You will need a standard phillips screwdriver, a small flatblade screwdriver and 7mm, 8mm, 10mm and 13mm wrenches and a Torx T27 driver. A small tack puller (available at any hardware store) will also be handy. You will also need a jack and lug wrench (the ones that come with the car will be fine).
Will I need to cut any of the car's wires?
No wire cutting is necessary.
What happens if I make a wiring error?
The use of matching color coding for the eight wires to connect will make a wiring error unlikely. If you do make one, the unit was carefully designed to neither be damaged nor damage the vehicle for the vast majority of wiring errors. In fact, if you damage the unit for any reason, return it and TheJagWrangler will replace it free within the one year warranty period. (Sorry, we cannot warrant your car against damage of any kind, though this is highly unlikely.)
Tell me more about these Posi-tap connectors you provide?
Posi-taps are a patented wire splicing connector that requires no tools and no solder, yet are exceptionally reliable. Unlike T-taps and 'suitcase connectors' which are commonly available at the local auto-parts store, Posi-taps do not slice through the insulation weakening the factory wiring, and thereby leading to failure. Posi-taps just make a pinhole in the wire, so the wire retains its structural integrity. They are significantly more costly, but I would not use anything else on my vehicles. For more information, see http://www.posi-lock.com/posiplug.html.
What else is included with the module?
All the materials you need. The module includes the color coded wiring harness to match your model year and left- or right-hand drive configuration. Ample zip-ties, Posi-taps and industrial strength self-adhesive Velcro (to mount the module inside the door panel) are also included. A length of double-faced tape is supplied to re-attach a small section of the door vapor barrier that is peeled back during installation.
Does the console top control button still work?
Yes.
Does the door key switch top control still work?
Yes.
Does this module allow the top to operate when the car is in motion?
No, the remote top operation is disabled whenever the ignition is on.
Can I use the remote to operate the top from inside the car?
Yes, with the ignition off, but we recommend that you use the console button to operate the top from inside the car as one would normally do.
I saw a posting for how to 'drop the top' with some relays on Jaguarforums.com. Maybe that will save me a few dollars. Why should I buy this module instead?
--We offer a full set of features. Instead of just drop and stop in the online version, this module has drop, raise, reverse and stop.
--We offer a complete kit. You do not need to locate and purchase a bag of different parts.
--Much easier installation. You do not need to wire together a bunch of parts.
--No need to cut any factory wiring in your car.
--No soldering or crimping required.
--More foolproof installation with matching color coding, built-in LED lamps for testing and built-in protection from wiring errors.
--One year warranty.
WIll this effect my automobile warranty?
Any aftermarket modification might effect your warranty if you still have one. Installation is at your own risk.
Can I download the installation instructions?
Sure:
Instructions
The instructions say to disconnect the battery. What do I need to do when I reconnect the battery?
All you need to do is reset the power windows. To do this you simply lower both windows and hold the button until you hear a 'click', then raise the windows and hold the button until you hear a 'click' again.
On some non-USA market cars, you may also need to re-enter the radio security code which should be with your car manual, or can be obtained from a dealer if it is lost.
If I ever need to return the unit for repair, do I need to disconnect all the wiring I installed?
No, the module is connectorized. You can simply unplug it and return it for repair in the unlikely event repair or replacement is needed.
Will this unit drain my battery when the car is off for a few days?
No, the module is designed to have virtually zero standby power drain.
I have a convertible a top pressure reduction kit installed. Is this module compatible?
Yes, it is compatible with both the electrical and hydraulic pressure reduction kits. As a plus, operating the top with the remote operates only under battery power, so the reduced voltage with the engine off helps extend the life of your system.
